City of Hawkinsville to Start Phase II of Historic Resources Survey
The City of Hawkinsville has been awarded a 2020 Historic Preservation Fund grant from the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The grant is for the city to conduct phase two of a historic resources survey.
Hawkinsville was one of eight Georgia municipalities to receive grants in support of historic preservation activities in their respective communities. The 2020 Historic Preservation Fund grants facilitate historic preservation planning initiatives and projects throughout the state. The grants are provided annually through the Historic Preservation Fund of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service and are administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
The City of Hawkinsville has awarded the contract to historic preservation consultant Landmark Preservation LLC (Landmark) out of Savannah to complete the comprehensive second phase. The second phase will include an estimated 593 historic resources within the city limits. Utilized as an important historic preservation planning tool, historic resources surveys (HRS) are integral components to the work of historic preservation commissions across the country. Recommended to be performed once every ten years, HRS reports provide commissions with the data needed to better understand what historic resources remain on the landscape and how best to preserve them. Historic resources surveyed include buildings, structures, objects, sites, and significant landscape features aged a minimum of 40 years of age (1980 and prior). This allows for the documentation of resources that may gain significance within the next ten years.
Historic Resource Survey work does not impact property taxes or restrictions on property. All survey work will be completed from the public right of way, unless otherwise invited onto private property. Landmark will begin surveying this month. If you have any information that you wish to share with the consultant regarding the historic nature or history of your property, send an email to Landmark’s Project Manager, Ellie Isaacs at ellie@landmarkpreservationllc.com.
